Hi all, I am keen to get an idea of what range of work is being done by animators here in SA.

Do you do architectural vis, movie pre-vis (anyone?), commercials, medical visualisations, web animation?
Or any other type of work?

And if you could give a brief discription of the type of skills required, that would be great!

To start it off, here's what I do:

I am a 3d animator, working mainly for broadcast - TVCs, tops & tails, online branding, VFX etc.
My work entails modelling, animating, rigging, scripting, particle fx, light & shade, rendering, compositing, rotoscoping, motion graphics and video editing & conversion/compression.?

Thanks,
Matt.

My name is Gareth Qually, and got my start in computer graphics back in 1991. I am specialist in motion graphics design, compositing and technical animation, although like most people here I also do many other things like vfx, character animation, VR set design etc. My tools of the trade is mainly 3DS Max (not so much these days), Cinema 4D and Blender with the all Adobe apps. I am really liking the open source alternatives and I think my days of buying 3D apps are over.

Ch... ch... changes!

Hey guys - thanks for the comments!

It's interesting to note that since I posted this question, I have become far more specialised!

I am now using Houdini doing lighting & fx, and I have to say that I am loving it. Having the opportunity to become an expert at something is bloody marvelous, and I hope that our industry will evolve and allow for lots more specialisation.

Later,
Matt.

Hey Matt, I thought I would

Hey Matt,
I thought I would throw in my two cents. I'm a CG freelancer. In the past my work has mostly consisted of broadcast but more recently as a freelancer I'm finding work for corporate clients, which can include AV's, internal presentations and web related stuff.

My weapons of choice are Maya and After Effects currently. I'd like to think of myself as a jack of all trades, master of one. I can model, texture, light, animate, composite. I find my strengths lie in the more technical aspects of CG. This would include rigging, dynamics, scripting, and pipeline management. In my spare time I'm developing an asset management system that would help to merge all areas of the pipeline together better.

Hi, I'm Garshwin!

I've also realized that one has to really do a combination of things to stay afloat but it is really enjoyably...even to the point of analyzing ur skillsets seperately and think, "Hey, all these are seperate careers, isn't suffice to say that you wanna get paid per hour for each career?"

Lol, just imagine how powerful you'd be!

I also create TVC's, design brand CI's and Identikits, etc. I conceptualize, storyboard, scriptwrite, copywrite, design, manage, illustrate, vfx, motion graphics, sound design, VO directing, edit, compress-export, communicate and upload to the T.V stations.

...do web banners when the web designer needs a hand and print if the graphic designer is sick.

...in a nutshell.

I use to do only print design as a freelance job but now I've decided to do motion graphic projects et al as well.

yes, good place to get to know whos out there!

I have been freelancing since 2000! and most of my work has been cartoon related! My second project really got me on the road to where I wanted to keep going! I was doing Bluster & Tikolo, published in YOU, HUISGENOOIT and DRUM for about 6yrs. Also did all their interactive CDs with all character design and animation. I finally broke off from them, and carried on in various odds and ends here, again, mostly cartoon as that seems to be my fortie.

I was over in Ireland for 3months looking for work, and it all went pear shaped there, so I had to come back, and now im doing most of my work from overseas clients, mostly the USA. so im earning a few dollers, aswell as local clients. Its up and down still here, but I think things are looking up for SA, or CT especially in the animation industry!

The secret in any industry is to focus on what you good at! We as Africans tend to feel that we can cover allot of things! Maybe thats why the overseas clients like us so much!

Of course, you all can

Of course, you all can easily say i do this and that, cos in the real sense of it, this is AFRICA. In this media industry, we tend to draw to becoming jack of all trade. No offense, really, it's quite good, but we should know where our strength really lies.
In a feature length film, for example, there is always a division of labor, in fact, some people just monitor a rendering process. If you think that's not a job, think again, anything can go wrong in a rendering process, especially when you leave your rendering to slumber on your mattress.
That's just a piece of information, but for the sake of this post-i am a VFX artist (rotoscoping, particle fx, keying and compositing) modeler/ rendering and texture artist/ animator and rigger and graphic artist. And softwares that i use... they are only as good as i am.

Good Idea Matt

I think this is a great forum topic for members to introduce themselves and what they do.

I am Gregg, I run iaminawe with my wife and partner Angella and we do a range of things including design/ illustration/ web/ animation and theatre. We built and designed this site and are happy to see the community starting to use it with some awesome new videos and images been posted by members.

I handle the animation component of our company and After Effects is my primary weapon of choice. I also do some 3D work and started off years ago in 3DS Max, moved to Maya, played with Blender and am currently loving working with Cinema 4D.

We also developed some interesting animation workflows using Corel Painter that we use from time to time and our style is often experimental and quite varied. Flash and Moho also sneak in to the mix occasionally for more vector type stuff.

We have created a few music videos, some commercials, TV show idents and documentary animations but the bulk of our animation work has been live events and theatre. Animation for theatre??

We have created animated backdrops for a wide range of events including floating opera's, afrikaans dramas, greek tragedies, democracy celebrations, comedy festivals, jazz dance, big band concerts, musical reviews, live music and soccer celebrations.

For the past few years I have also really enjoyed the spontanteity of remixing animation and visuals live as VJ Skabenga for a variety of local and international acts including Goldfish, The Real Estate Agents, Humanizer, Considerate Builders Scheme, Sweat X and international legends DJ Krush & DJ Spooky. Using mostly Resolume and now VDMX and Quartz Composer I am a chronic visualist and graphic addict.

Our animation clients include Artscape, Appletizer, David Kramer, Goldfish, The Most Amazing Show, Nandos, Pocko and many more.
