Animation Industry in South-Africa, seems like more jobs are needed.

Well a couple of weeks ago I graduated from Cityvarsity in Cape Town with a Advanced diplama in animation and new media. It has a fancy title, whoo-hoo, before I elaborate further, I'd like to give a bit of background on the whole situation.

The way the course work is after 2 years you allready graduate with a diploma in animation, this deploma basically covers all stopmotion and 2D animation. You then have the option to do an additional year, learning Maya and compositing stuff. I was told " definately do this extra year, your salary increases exponentially!!" wow, what total bs.

No denying that extra year did teach me alot, and I had time to teach myself alot, in that respect it was worth it, but looking at the situation that most graduate animators find themselves in at the moment, I'm really surprised that nobody has voiced their consern or opinions as of yet on the fact that, here are all these new graduates, that have no jobs and can't find any, just look at the status updates of most of the animators on this site, "Graduate looking for job", "Freelance work needed", " will work for penuts" exc.

Then I see this article on the main site "The Cape Film Commission and partners are creating a world class
animation academy that will create 10 000 new jobs for young PDI's in
animation by 2020",OK so how does this help anybody that is currently looking for a job? How is training more people, creating more jobs?

Anyway so the point is after 3 years of studying, some of the people that graduated with the advanced diploma, went to look for jobs at the same places, that the people that graduated after 2 years with the normal animation diploma went to, I mean doesn't that kinda defeat the point of having to do a extra year if you're gonna go work for the same company your classmate found a job at after only studying for 2 years, what the situation basically is then, you payed for a extra year of studies and ended up working under your classmate that knows less than you, how messed up is that.

I certainly can complain alot for someone that found a job at his dream company, it just seems like someone has to say something about all the graduates that don't find jobs and end up leaving the country to go work as farm hands in the US or UK or whatever.

Frustrated!!!

Just read this omw its been so many years ago but I have studied 3 years animation after 1st year anyone could go get work but we were told to do all 3, I have now been looking for 3 years and still am no one is even willing to give an unpaid internship just so that i could gain experience its so frustrating many many of the students in my class are doing something completly different as it was like paying so much to study was just a waste of time. Its so hard on everyone that studied this but when advertised we were garunteed work afterwards.

Yikes!!!

@101jazz101: Am also worried... My POA 2011 (Plan Of Action) was to study part-time through The Animation School (prevoiusly Universal Computer Arts Academy) but now thinking of just buying software with the money they're charging for a couple of hours per day (R22 500 per annum which has to be paid in FULL on the day of registration and is non-refundable) and skill myself up...

@Gerhard: I'm forever grateful to you for publishing this piece. Quite an eye-opener...

@All graduates: Even Friends Of Design?? They look promising enough... *touch wood*

Hi Splinta

Please tell me more.

Thanks!

ok now i'm worried, I'm to

ok now i'm worried, I'm to start studying animation next year in Cape Town, but if the general feel is that the training in SA, well stinks, now what? if you could do it over would you study in SA nevermind the same place?

The problem is the training

The problem is the training in SA is woefully inept at actually teaching you how to be a good animator, modeler, lighter or anything really creative, They teach you how to use the software but that is all you are going to get. Take a good long look at your showreel and then go check out a French training school called Goblins.

Ola! Gerhard

Amen to that, do u know dat after completing my diploma i am still searching for job, this means i have been trying for a 1year and half looking.

Anyway its good to hear that u have found something and enjoy it.
Sharp! its good to find one of my class mate on this site. Good Luck!
