About Terril
Calder
(Orkney Cree Métis) an international aboriginal visual artist and film maker
has produced an array of award winning films. Most notably to date would be
last year’s honourable mention from The Sundance Film Festival. She has been
awarded many Canadian National Grants and has been requested to be on a peer
assessment committee for the Canada Council for the Arts and for the Ontario
Arts Council. Hailing from The Rainy River district Calder was trained in
visual at the University of Manitoba as a drawing major. She also studied
film/theatre/photography and was granted a special topics in performance art
under the guidance of Performance Artist Sharon Alward. In Winnipeg she became
a member of Video Pool and was accepted for their “First Video Fund” through
which she was awarded training in video production. She exhibited her visual
art with the historically influential Student Bolshevik collective until
leaving for Toronto in 1992. Calder met the Shake Well performance art
collective and joined them in various exhibitions that led her to the founding
group of the 7a*11d International Performance Art festival in Toronto. She
curated and organized international exhibitions with the group until leaving
for additional training in 3-D animation and special effects at the Computer
Technology Institute. Later an amalgamation of her interests would bring her
into a successful career in stop frame animation. She has lectured and taught
art through the years with various organizations that include the National
Ballet School of Canada, Intercity Angels, Art in the Park program, Artists in
Schools, and the University of Manitoba. Calder been featured in a
panel/exhibition at Toronto’s Harbour Front Center and recently at the Cinefest
Film Festival. She is currently working on her much anticipated feature stop
frame animated production entitled, “The Lodge”.
